FBI ordered to reveal bugging trick

A judge in the United States has ordered the FBI to reveal how it bugged the keyboard of the son of a mafia boss. The bureau bugged the computer keyboard of Nicodemo Scarfo Jr, charged with running illegal gambling and loan operations, after it failed to unscramble encrypted files stored on his computer"s hard disk. But it refused to reveal how the bugging was done, arguing that this would endanger national security and FBI investigators. Mr Scarfo"s lawyers are trying to discover the bugging method and have the FBI"s evidence ruled inadmissible

Police warning over Net law change

A European law designed to protect Internet users" privacy could give paedophiles shelter on the Web, British police chiefs have warned. Europe"s Council of Ministers wants Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to keep data for longer periods for crime fighting purposes. Logs of surfing activity and records of e-mails are regarded as vital by detectives in combating cyber-crime, including paedophile activity. But police chiefs are alarmed Euro MPs may insist that all ISP records are immediately destroyed. The European Council of Ministers" amendment faces competition from a separate European Parliament proposal which says all ISP records should be destroyed to protect users" privacy.

Microsoft, Yahoo! join forces in instant-messaging

Microsoft and Yahoo! announced Wednesday they will join forces to provide free instant-messaging services online. The plan will bring together the world"s biggest software manufacturer and the internet search-engine giant to compete head on with America Online, which has dominated the instant-messaging sector worldwide. The two companies said they hope to have about 275 million users and create the "largest consumer community in the world by allowing users to send messages via Microsoft"s MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger." Microsoft and Yahoo! did not, however, indicate any plans to work together on the Voice over Internet Protocol that enables users to talk over the internet.

 Nowadays, the widespread ICT actions taken in the global domains, and the importance of IT as the most rapid growing scientific and technological sector of the society has urged the government to boost the investment in this sector, so as to pave the way for a reliable and prosperous platform toward the development activities of the country. Recently, our country"s management trend has adopted this efficient approach, and its practical ground-works has been laid. According to this fact , and following the approval of renaming The Ministry of  PTT to The Ministry of ICT , programs and plans for ICT development and restructuring have been set in a new method and more seriously.   Establishing two infra-organizational councils, IT Supreme Council and Space Council, two mother companies  for Telecommunications and Post , two ICT related organizations, Organization for Space and Organization for Communications Regulations, and Launching three   new subsidiaries as Mobile Company, Data Company and Backbone Company with special functions, reveals some part of the  improvements . 

The following shows briefly the telecommunication situation in Iran.       

1. Fixed Communication

Fixed telephone Line section is the most important activity of TCI, as it has planned the daily and on demand activation of fixed lines as a major and basic service on the agenda. To this effect, with the last year"s activation of more than 1771051 lines, as the highest number of lines activated in the recent years, the number of the whole country"s fixed lines reached 18404837 in july 2005 . The penetration rate of fixed  Lines , with the addition of 2.36 percent, has also increased from 23.06 percent in march 2004 to 27.13 in july 2005  which has surpassed the world"s average. Additionally, at the moment, the penetration rate is 27.13 percent now (july 2005).          

Moreover, for the ever-increasing welfare of the nation, TCI has made every effort to focus on the development of public telephone network , including coin box and credit card telephones in the recent years.Accordingly, with the increase of 8446 local and 11214 long-distance public telephone sets in 2003 , their number in the country reached 132415 and 50940 respectively in july 2005 .The company also put all of the working analogue lines of the fixed network out of service.
